EV Hangar Works conducts research and development to fill gaps in the current electric aviation supply pipeline and explore opportunities to use electric propulsion to transform sport flying.
 

Why Electric Tow Planes

Compared to an ICE airplane, an electric airplane benefits from:

  • Lower hourly operating cost
  • Lower maintenance costs
  • Higher availability
  • Lower noise

However, compared to an ICE airplane, an electric airplane suffers from:

  • (Typically) higher acquisition cost
  • Reduced endurance and range

 

The Aerotow Mission Emphasizes Electric Propulsion Benefits and Minimizes Electric Propulsion Limitations

Aerotow mission characteristics:

  • Local, short flights
  • Frequent usage
  • Proximity to customers and staff

Suitability of electric propulsion to aerotow mission characteristics:

  • Battery capacity is adequate for local, short flights
  • Frequent usage with a reduced hourly operating cost results in large savings
  • Significant regen and quicker descent should be achieved after tow release
  • Quiet operation in proximity to customers and staff will improve communications (and the experience) for all
