In 2009, Flight Design developed a proof-of-concept, mild hybrid electric propulsion system based on a Rotax 914 internal combustion engine (ICE) with 115 HP peak power and an electric motor with 30 kW (40 HP) peak power.

The motor is mechanically connected between ICE and propeller, making the configuration a “parallel hybrid”. Because the ICE runs anytime the propeller is spinning and the motor has lower power than the ICE, the configuration is also called a “mild hybrid”.

Flight Design didn’t name this hybrid system, but here it will be “Flight Design 914mh”.
