Yes we’re mostly waiting

Most discussions of the viability of electric propulsion for manned sport aircraft center on the low energy density of current EV batteries. Even with the major advances in battery technology leading to the currently state-of-the-art LiFePO4 EV batteries, electric conversion of an ICE-powered aircraft typically reduces the cruise speed and/or range of the converted aircraft. For all but short-range missions, that’s a show-stopper for most pilots. That’s why most manned sport aircraft being built today aren’t getting electric propulsion.
